Know a veteran, service member, or first responder who's been thinking about adding a furry friend to the family? Here's the perfect chance to make it happen—for free!

The Humane Society of West Michigan is hosting Rescues for Heroes: Free Adoption Day on Saturday, May 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this special one-day event, adoption fees will be waived for all dogs and cats six months and older, along with small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, and more.

Who qualifies? Veterans, active military, firefighters, police officers, EMTs, nurses, medical assistants, and other first responders are all welcome. Even immediate family members of these everyday heroes are eligible to adopt for free! It’s a small way of saying “thank you” to the people who give so much to our community.

Rescues for Heroes: Free Adoption Day takes place at the Humane Society of West Michigan, located at 3077 Wilson Dr. NW in Grand Rapids. The organization says this special adoption day is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor who wanted to give back to those who serve.
