Reduced Pet Adoption Fees at 20+ Michigan Shelters This Spring
I’ve adopted cats my whole life and spent time working with rescues, so I can tell you this time of year gets crowded fast.

Spring means kitten season, and shelters across Michigan are already feeling it. More animals are coming in, and a lot of places are at or close to capacity. That is why this next event matters so much!

The BISSELL Pet Foundation is bringing back its nationwide Empty the Shelters event from May 1 to May 17. This year marks 10 years of the program. Since it started in 2016, it has helped nearly 400,000 pets find homes.
During the event, participating shelters, including more than 20 in Michigan, will offer reduced adoption fees of $70 or less. The adoption package is also more comprehensive than what many people expect.

Dogs and cats go home already spayed or neutered, with age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, a heartworm test, and flea and tick treatment. Adopters also receive a month of Heartgard and Nexgard, along with a Smart QR dog license. It removes a lot of the upfront cost that can make people hesitate.
Some participating Michigan shelters include:
- Al-Van Humane Society - 07591 Blue Star Highway, South Haven
- Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit - 16121 Reckinger Road, Dearborn
- Genesee County Animal Control - 4351 Pasadena Ave., Flint
- Harbor Humane Society - 14345 Bagely St., West Olive
- Humane Animal Treatment Society - 1105 S. Isabella Rd, Mt. Pleasant
- Humane Society of West Michigan - 3077 Wilson Ave. NW, Grand Rapids
- Ionia County Animal Shelter - 3835 Sparrow Dr., Ionia
- Kent County Animal Shelter - 740 Fuller NE, Grand Rapids
- Livingston County Animal Control - 304 E. Grand River Ave., Howell
