A Major Upgrade for the Otters

The biggest change is a brand-new North American river otter habitat set to open during OtterPalooza, happening May 22–24. The new space replaces a 40-year-old enclosure and is more than three times larger, featuring over 3,200 square feet of land and water areas, more than 21,000 gallons of water, underwater viewing windows, and natural spaces designed for swimming, digging, and exploration.

You'll even be able to watch otters from below the surface and see feeding behaviors that mirror life in the wild!

A Sculpture With a Second Life Story

Ahead of OtterPalooza, the Grand Rapids zoo has unveiled a new otter sculpture.  Artist Craig Rhyan created the piece using actual litter collected from local waterways. It environmental cleanup into a visual story about restoration and care, showing how local action connects directly to wildlife health.

Help Name the Zoo’s New Otter Sculpture

That sculpture is also part of a community moment. It still needs a name, and guests are invited to submit ideas ahead of OtterPalooza. The winning name will be revealed during the event weekend.

Some of my favorites so far are Ottermus Prime and Rosie the River Otter!

OtterPalooza will also feature keeper chats, live music, and special programming throughout the zoo as visitors get their first look at the new habitat in action.
