Animal Torture in Michigan Is Classified as a Serious Felony Offense
In 2019, Michigan strengthened its laws in response to research showing a strong link between intentional animal abuse and future violence against humans. First-degree animal torture now carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, making it one of the strictest penalties in the United States.
In Michigan, penalties for animal torture are divided into three degrees, based on the severity of the act and the offender’s intent. Below is a breakdown of each degree and the corresponding penalties that reflect the seriousness of these crimes:
- First-Degree Offense – The intentional killing or torture of a companion animal can result in up to 10 years in prison, a maximum fine of $5,000, and up to 500 hours of community service.
- Second-Degree Offense – Reckless actions that result in the death or torture of an animal can lead to up to 7 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, and as many as 500 hours of community service.
- Third-Degree Offense – Threatening to kill or torture an animal in order to control or intimidate another person can result in up to 4 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, and up to 500 hours of community service.

A 19-year-old man is looking at 10 years in prison for allegedly stabbing his mother's dog several times with his pocket-knife.
19-Year-Old Faces Charges for Dog Torture in Michigan
According to Up North Live, Traverse City police received an anonymous tip on Friday, May 1, 2026, alleging that 19-year-old Zachary Beckham stabbed a dog multiple times and left it in the woods to die.
Beckham later led police to the location where he left the dog. Officers notified animal control, who transported the animal to a veterinary hospital for emergency surgery. The dog is expected to recover.

Beckham is being held on a $25,000 bond and due back in front of a judge on May 22.
