GR Man Arrested on Allegations of Torture, Death Threats

36-year-old Derrick Christopher Adams has been arrested and charged in Kent County, Michigan, for allegedly torturing his girlfriend in his home where he allegedly held her captive for two days. Police reported the girlfriend said Adams allegedly used a knife while he threatened to kill her. She went on to claim he beat her and used a waterboarding technique to torture her.
According to MLive, Adams allegedly became angry after the woman received a call from a family member and punched her. He then took her phone and, according to her account, continued hitting her whenever he found a contact in her phone he did not like.
After the alleged assault from Adams, he made his girlfriend get naked, then began to torture her with a waterboarding tactic. This happened multiple times during the night, causing her to be unable to breathe and eventually pass out.

Adams allegedly texted her family members pretending to be her and even missed work for two days so she could not leave the house.
The woman was allegedly forced to use a bucket as a toilet and stay in the basement. She said Adams threatened to kill her with a pocketknife if she tried to leave the basement.
Two days after allegedly being held captive, Adams took the woman to Woodland Mall. She locked herself in the bathroom and texted several people asking them to come get her. When she came out, Adams allegedly grabbed her and tried to walk her through the mall, but she broke free. As he chased her, mall security stepped in, and she was able to get into a family member’s vehicle and go to the hospital.
Police later arrested Adams during a traffic stop. They obtained a search warrant for his home, where they reportedly found the woman’s feces, the water jug, and several knives.
Adams is currently out on a $25,000 cash bond and is scheduled to return to Grand Rapids District Court. Adams is scheduled to appear in court October 6 as the case proceeds.
