Like many professions that serve the public, nursing comes with a code of ethics. It’s a standard nurses are expected to follow, guiding how they make professional decisions, advocate for their patients, and uphold their responsibility to do what’s right.

The core ethical principles of nursing include respecting patients, helping others, avoiding harm, and treating everyone fairly. Patients have the right to make their own healthcare decisions based on their personal values and beliefs. Nurses should always act with compassion and take steps to help their patients. They also have a responsibility to avoid causing harm and to protect patients from injury. Every patient deserves to be treated fairly and equally, regardless of their background or personal circumstances.

According to WZZM 13, former Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital nurse Kieran Ansley has been accused of allegedly causing extensive bruising and fractures to the legs of a 4-month-old baby girl. The baby was born prematurely and had been in the NICU, where she remained hospitalized and was entrusted to the care of Ansley.

When the baby’s mother returned about 10 hours later to visit her daughter, Ansley, who was not the normal nurse, handed the baby to her. That’s when she noticed that her baby’s tongue looked dark and that bruises covered different parts of her body.

After doctors tested the baby for medical conditions that could have caused the bruising, they determined that the injuries were the result of physical abuse. Hospital records showed that the baby was visited by nursing staff 32 times that night, and Ansley was involved in 27 of those visits. Other nurses also reported that he seemed to handle babies more roughly than the other nurses.

Ansley was later arrested and arraigned on child abuse charges. He is expected to have another court hearing in early November.
