New 10-Acre Dog Park Coming to Kent County

The Kent County Parks Department is gearing up to celebrate the grand opening of Wahlfield Dog Park in Comstock Park. It is the first in the Kent County system designed specifically for our four-legged pals, and man, they really went all out for this one!

Now, I do not own a dog right now (many cats, yes!). But looking at the plans for this place, I might just go hang out anyway because it looks incredibly cool, and who doesn’t love watching happy, adorable dogs living their best lives?

What to Expect at the New Wahfield Dog Park

Also, we've been experiencing some seriously sweltering days so far this summer, and everyone is looking for a way to beat the heat.

That is why the biggest selling point of this new park is a total game-changer: they built a one-acre swimming pond that features an actual dog beach and a jumping dock. Can you imagine the pure, chaotic joy of happy pups launching themselves into the water to cool off? I need to see it in person!

They even thought about the possible muddy aftermath of the beach. The park includes a four-season family restroom equipped with a dog wash station.

Plus, if your dog is on the smaller side and gets a little intimidated by the big guys, there's a dedicated one-acre area just for petite pups to play safely.. There is also a two-acre open activity field, plus crushed stone walking trails through natural areas if you want a scenic stroll.

A Massive Overhaul for Wahlfield Park

This incredible dog park is just the latest phase in a massive overhaul to make Wahlfield Park a premier local destination. If you haven't been out there lately, they have been seriously busy! On top of the dog park, they've added major mountain biking trail expansions—including a kids' loop and a strider bike loop for toddlers—plus brand-new playground structures, picnic pavilions, and tons of upgraded parking.

A huge part of this is thanks to the Wahlfield family themselves. Fritz and Marlene Wahlfield originally donated the first 50 acres for the park back in 1983. Now, Fritz Wahlfield Jr. and Wahlfield Construction have contributed over $200,000 in work and donations to help bring these modern features to life.

Dog Park Grand Opening Details

The official grand opening of the new dog park is coming up on July 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wahlfield Park North, located at 7117 M-37 in Comstock Park. Fritz Wahlfield Jr. will be there for the ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick things off.
