Kent County Animal Shelter Almost Full – How You Can Help
Are you or someone you know thinking of adopting a pet? Help spread the word!
Kent County Animal Shelter is nearing capacity. In reality, at the time of this post, they could already be out of space.

Kent County Animal Shelter Almost Full
On Tuesday, the shelter shared on Facebook that only nine dog kennels were available. On top of that, many of the dogs currently in their care are on mandatory stray hold, meaning they can’t leave the shelter for several days while staff waits to see if an owner comes forward.

And that’s the constant pressure point for animal shelters. Even when space gets tight, the calls don’t slow down. Lost pets still need to be taken in. Stray dogs still get picked up. Abandoned animals still need care. And in some cases, medical emergencies show up at the door whether there’s room or not.
The good news is there are a few very real ways the community can help ease things up!
How the Community Can Help The Shelter
Adoption is the most direct option. The shelter has dogs ready to go home right now, and adoption fees are $70. That includes vaccinations, microchip, and spay or neuter surgery. You can see adoptable animals here.
But even if you're not ready for a new furry family member right now, there are still things you can do to support the shelter!

Reclaiming a lost pet quickly also makes a big difference. With the storms that have moved through, I feel like I'm seeing lots more "lost dog" and "lost cat" social media posts than usual. When pets are reunited quickly, kennel space opens up faster for incoming strays, and that part really matters right now.
Also, sharing matters a ton! Getting these animals in front of more eyes increases the odds of a faster reunion or adoption.
