You'd think it wouldn't need saying, but here we are...

Storms and a massive amount of rain in Michigan the past few days have flooded homes, damaged businesses, and shut down major highways. The National Weather Service confirmed that at least four tornadoes touched down in the Mitten State over the weekend.

Metro Detroit was hit hard, with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declaring a state of emergency in Wayne County. According to the New York Times, 50 drivers had to be rescued from flooded roadways and 350 vehicles were damaged. Photos show cars submerged in water on I-94 and I-75.

As of Monday, June 28, I-94 remained closed in parts of Dearborn and Detroit, the Detroit Free Press Reports.

But the highways being shut down didn't stop some people... The Michigan State Police Tweeted pictures of what appears to be folks swimming and tubing in the flood water and a semi-truck that became submerged. Thankfully it sounds like the driver was OK after having to abandon his truck and swim to shore...

I love how frank they are: "It's gross. Don't do it."

I'd assume the same probably goes for jet-skiing? Even though MSP didn't *explicitly* state it. Seems like it'd be pretty unsanitary too. I came across this video in the All Things Michigan Facebook group:

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also Tweeted a warning to tell people to stay out of the flood water.

In the thread they shared a lot of good tips for dealing with flooding:

  • After flood waters recede: Use caution when reentering a home or building that was flooded. Wash and sanitize flooded areas if your home was flooded & closed up for several days.
  • Throw away food that may have come in contact with flood or storm water; perishable foods that have not been refrigerated properly due to power outages; and food with an unusual odor, color or texture.
