When a kidnapping crosses state lines, such as from Wisconsin to Michigan, both states may have the authority to prosecute the suspect. However, the case often falls under federal jurisdiction. Under the Federal Kidnapping Act, commonly known as the Lindbergh Law, transporting a kidnapping victim across state borders can trigger federal involvement, typically leading to an investigation by agencies such as the FBI.

Michigan State Police located the vehicle the suspect allegedly stole along M-28 near Sault Ste. Marie. A short time later, a man entered a store in Kincheloe and reported that he had been kidnapped. After speaking with the victim and obtaining a description of the suspect, troopers located the man at a nearby restaurant, where he was taken into custody without incident.
