A visit to a West Michigan county park is usually filled with laughter, cookouts, and families enjoying the outdoors. But at one Ottawa County park, that peaceful scene was shattered by gunfire, leaving five people injured.

Bass River Recreation Area is a popular park along the Grand River between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. With 3.5 miles of river frontage, it offers opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting.

Bass River Recreation Area also remains open during the winter, offering opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and other seasonal outdoor activities.

For many regulars and seasonal visitors, the park is a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. But that changed over the weekend when a party erupted into gunfire, leaving five people hospitalized.

What began as a gathering of adults and teenagers at Bass River Recreation Area on Sunday turned violent when a lone shooter opened fire on a group of unarmed people.

WZZM 13 reported that five people were shot, leaving one in critical condition and four others in stable condition. One of the victims, a minor, was found near M-231 and transported to a hospital. The remaining victims were driven toward 112th Avenue, where the driver flagged down Ottawa County sheriff's deputies, who quickly provided medical assistance and helped get them to the hospital.

After interviewing witnesses at the party, investigators used the information to locate the suspect and the vehicle. The suspect and three other individuals were taken into custody. The suspected shooter is being held at the Ottawa County Jail.
