This may be a “Michigan thing,” but plenty of Michiganders have a place up north where they escape for the weekend. Some call it a camp, others a cabin or cottage. But what do Yoopers call their getaway?

One of the biggest parts of Michigan culture is the tradition of heading north on Friday afternoons for a weekend surrounded by nature. Some people camp, others book a hotel, while many have their own special place up north, a camp, cabin, or cottage.

Michiganders traveling up north year-round for easy access to Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior. Great spots for boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, ATV/Side-by-Side trail riding, winter sports, leaf tours, camping and more.

Recently, a poster on the Upper Peninsula subreddit who is writing a book asked, “Do you call them camps, cabins, or cottages?” In the Lower Peninsula, all three terms are commonly used to describe a place up north. But what about Yoopers? Is there one term that’s preferred in the Upper Peninsula?

You can't get much further north than in the Keweenaw Peninsula where everything gets called a camp.

Reading through the subreddit thread, many Yoopers said cottages were a Lower Peninsula thing.

After sifting through the Reddit thread, I learned that hands down Yoopers say camp when referring to their place up north.

What I learned is many Lower Peninsula residents refer to their lake houses as cottages, while hunters often call their getaway a cabin or camp.
