If it feels like winter showed up early this year, you’re not imagining it. West Michigan has already been buried in snow, and the temperatures have been dipping below freezing more days than not.

And while most of us are digging out the boots, hunting for an ice scraper, or cursing that first icy sidewalk, this early blast of winter hits our older neighbors a little harder.

That’s why Consumers Energy is putting out a reminder this week: if you’re a senior (or caring for one) there are some helpful programs available right now to keep heating bills manageable, the lights on, and homes safe as temps continue to slide for the next few months of West Michigan winter.

Most people don’t know this, but if the head of your household is 65 or older, you may be eligible for a $4 monthly credit on your electric bill. It’s not a huge number on its own, but it adds up over the course of our long Michigan winters.

And if the credit hasn’t shown up on a bill yet, Consumers Energy says it could be as simple as a birthday not being entered correctly, which they can fix with a quick phone call.

There’s also some added peace of mind available through their Winter Protection Plan. It runs annually from November through March, and keeps seniors from facing shut-offs or unpredictable spikes in winter payments. And if someone needs even more stability, there’s an 18-month Shut-Off Protection Plan that seniors can enroll in any time of year.

All of this comes at a good moment, because the cold arrived fast this season. Consumers Energy says their goal is to make sure older adults stay safe and comfortable at home, especially as heating systems work overtime.

If you’re looking to cut back a little more, even small things like sealing drafty windows, turning the thermostat down a degree or two, or using smart power strips can help trim the monthly bill. They also have other plans that may apply to you, so you might as well check their website to see how you can make those bills easier.

And if you know a senior who might need support, now is a good time to check in. The help is there, it’s just a matter of making sure people know where to find it.

Holiday Items You Can And Can't Recycle in West Michigan

The holidays create a lot of random waste (wrapping paper, gift bags, decor, and more). But can it all be recycled? Turns out, no - but there are other ways to get rid of the items that aren't recyclable.
