Another West Michigan craft beverage spot is wrapping up operations.

Already this year we've seen the closure of Atwater in Grand Rapids, Greenbush in Sawyer, and Grand River Brewery in Marshall. Now we'll be saying goodbye to a beloved local spot in Mattawan.

Murray Street Brewing Company has officially announced that it will be shutting down.

A Downtown Mattawan Favorite

The brewery first opened back in December 2021 inside a historic red barn at 57620 Murray St., which was originally built as a livery stable in 1868.

Over the last few years, Murray Street Brewing developed a reputation as a casual, community-focused gathering spot. Guests would stop in for house brews, including their signature "Matty Light," while bringing in takeout from neighboring restaurants to enjoy at the taproom.

So why call it quits now? The owners made it clear in their announcement that the decision came down to two major hits: personal life changes, and the brutal reality of trying to sustainably run a small taproom in today's craft beer market.

At this point, they've stopped brewing beer and will continue to serve what they have through the end of September, or until it runs out.

Why Small Michigan Breweries Are Struggling

This decision reflects a broader, ongoing shift across Michigan's craft beer landscape. The post-boom market has hit taprooms hard with skyrocketing costs for ingredients, labor, rent, and packaging.

Throw in a crowded market where consumer drinking habits are shifting toward ciders, seltzers, and non-alcoholic options, and smaller independent taprooms are getting squeezed from every angle.

What is Next for the Historic Red Barn?

While Murray Street is closing this chapter, the owners left the door open for the future, hoping the right team comes along to buy the historic barn and carry it into its next phase.
