Today, about a dozen restaurants remain, though multiple have closed over the years, including spots in Holland and on 28th Street in Kentwood. The latter was my go-to for late-night burgers and fries when I was in college in Grand Rapids in the early 2000s.

Steak 'n Shake Attempts to Stay Afloat

Like many chains, Steak ’n Shake has been struggling. The latest unusual move is the removal of microwaves from all locations, one of several steps the company has taken to stabilize its business. According to the chain, it’s also about improving food quality. Every restaurant is expected to be microwave-free by April 15.

Since 2018, the 91-year-old brand has closed more than 200 locations nationwide while overhauling nearly every part of its operations. According to QSR, the company made changes like cutting table service, shifting to kiosk-driven ordering, trimming the menu, and switching its fries from seed oils to beef tallow.

No More Microwaves at Steak 'n Shake

Of the new microwave ban, the chain wrote on social media:

Steak 'n Shake is removing all microwaves from its restaurants. We expect every unit to be microwave-free by April 15. Quality restaurants don't need microwaves. It is a part of our journey to improve food quality and use traditional methods of cooking only. Eat real food.

Another suggested bringing back car hops and getting rid of automated ordering kiosks, while one joked, “Them microwaves bout to be head chef at Applebee’s.”
