Would you pay $900 a year to skip the line and never pay a cover charge at a bar? One Michigan bar is giving customers a chance to purchase an exclusive membership that comes with some serious perks.

I’ve been playing in touring bands since graduating high school. Over years of performing across the country, I’ve come across a few clubs where you had to be a member to get in, but usually, it was for one of two reasons.

There used to be Playboy Clubs in 20 states from 1960 through the late 1980s. In the late ’80s, I performed at locations in Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, and Ohio. These clubs had Playmate waitresses and bartenders and required members to pay annual dues of around $25 to $50 depending upon location.

The other reason I encountered membership-only clubs was when we were performing down South. States like Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas use to have dry counties where alcohol sales were prohibited. To get around those restrictions, some clubs would sell nightly or annual memberships. By operating as a private club, they could legally serve alcohol to their members.

This could be an appealing deal for people who frequent the club and live in or around Lansing. But in the current economy, dropping $899 on a one-year membership might be a pretty tall order for a lot of people. See Harper’s Select membership terms.
