You've probably noticed we're living through a big ramen renaissance right now. While this beloved noodle dish boasts over 150 years of history, it is having an absolute moment in 2026. According to food trend forecasts from the National Restaurant Association, diners are actively craving elevated, comfort-driven noodle dishes.

Here in Grand Rapids, we are lucky to have some phenomenal local spots holding down the noodle scene. Ginza Sushi and Ramen Bar on Michigan Street is a personal go-to for their incredible broth depth, while Sapporo on 28th Street consistently delivers that authentic, soul-warming bowl you need on a crisp afternoon.

If you are willing to take a quick foodie road trip across Michigan, the national culinary site Tasting Table recently set out to find the top high-quality ramen restaurant in every single state. Using customer reviews, awards, and the hands-on experience of their editorial team, they looked for spots with diversified menus, local ingredients, and welcoming dining rooms.

The state crown went to Johnny Noodle King in Detroit.

Chef Les Molnar teamed up with Jacques and Christine Driscoll to open the spot in 2014. As the minds behind Detroit's famed Green Dot Stables, they brought that same low-pretension energy to ramen, putting a playful twist on "Detroit ramen" inside a cool, subway-tiled retro diner space.

That inventive spirit is exactly why Tasting Table singled it out. They gained fame for wild creations like corned beef ramen, Cajun catfish, and Creole butter mazeman.

If you catch them on special nights, you might even snag their famous Bayou Snapper Ramen with fried red snapper and Cajun chicken broth. You can also go classic with a black garlic Tonkotsu or try fusion hits like the Southwest Verde and fiery Newer Seoul bowl.
