I live an hour north of Grand Rapids and while the whole state gets snow, some parts get it much worse than others. In 2024, I only had to clear my driveway of snow one time. In 2025, I have cleared the driveway four times and winter is not nearly over.

In 2024, I didn't ice fish once. I reached out to my best friend who lives on the West side of the Upper Peninsula and there wasn't any ice up there either. For the first time in my lifetime, I got more snow than my buddy in the U.P. The crazy thing is I only had snow for about 10 days and that was it.

In 2025, I have ice-fished half a dozen times and will probably be able to fish into March this year and that is something I have not been able to do locally in several years. This year has been more like the winters we used to get in Michigan years ago.

The 2025 winter is the first one that has felt like a Michigan winter is a few years. Grand Rapids has already had 52 inches of snow fall and that is 2 inches more than normal. Msukegon is already at 57.8 inches but as you travel north or get close to the Great Lakes the totals get double to triple more.

According to WOOD, Gaylord is already 5 inches away from breaking its all-time snowfall record. This winter so far, Gaylord has had 180.9 inches of snow and the record to beat is 185.6 inches. Gaylord is expected snow this weekend and there is a good chance the record will be broken. Now that's a lot of snow.
