I was born in Detroit and grew up about 45 minutes from the city. As a kid, I always heard stories about the underground salt mines in Detroit. I never explored them, but have heard stories of people going into those underground tunnels.

In grade school, we were learning about the history of Michigan. We learned about the iron and copper mines in the Upper Peninsula. Iron ore was discovered in 1844, and copper was mined by Native Americans as early as 3000 B.C., but settlers began mining in the mid-1800s. There are tunnels all over the Upper Peninsula because of it.

According to FOX 17, 85 feet under the City of Grand Rapids, a maze of secret tunnels dates back to the 1800s when gypsum was mined in Michigan.
