Farmer Jack traces its roots back to 1927, when it opened as Tom’s Quality Meats. After several name changes and ownership shifts, the store officially became Farmer Jack in 1972.

Farmer Jack had fallen because of other grocery store chains buying power. By 2007, many locations had closed, while others were sold to Kroger, smaller local chains, and independent grocers.

Many still remember Farmer Jack's slogan of "It's always savings time." Another famous slogan the store used was "Made in Michigan, Sold at Farmer Jack."
