Sailboat Came Up Upon The Body 12 Miles Off The Shore

A sailboat out enjoying a perfect day of sailing came across a gruesome discovery Monday morning when they found a body floating in Lake Michigan, 12 miles off the coast of Berrien County.

The captain of the sailboat radioed to authorities at around 11:30am late Monday morning that he had come across what he thought was a body.

A Coast Guard crew out of the St. Joseph station was soon on the scene and fished the remains out of the water.

No Identification Of The Body Or Cause Of Death Has Been Released

The body is currently undergoing an autopsy at Western Michigan University to determine the cause of death and uncover clues as to the identity of the victim.

The Berrien County Detective Bureau is investigating. They are trying to unearth clues as to why the body was so far off the shore, whether it fell off of a watercraft or carried out by the currents.

Strong winds were present most of the weekend on Lake Michigan.

The body was recovered 12 miles off the coast of Shoreham Township, which is located between St. Joseph and Stevensville in Berrien County.
