Michigan Man Could Get 136 Years in Prison

A Michigan man faces up to 136 years in prison if convicted on all 18 criminal charges. The case is connected to a drug-smuggling scheme involving mail at eight Michigan prisons.

136 Years in Prison? Michigan Man Faces Stiff Sentence

According to the Michigan Department of Attorney General, 36-year-old Detroit man John Calhoun was arraigned in Detroit on multiple felony charges that could result in a combined sentence of up to 136 years if he is convicted. Calhoun is accused of being involved in a scheme to smuggle narcotics into eight Michigan prisons.

Calhoun was familiar with how the Michigan Department of Corrections handled inmate mail and used that knowledge to send packages disguised as correspondence from prisoners’ attorneys. Investigators say the packages instead contained controlled substances. The packages were allegedly sent to these eight Michigan correctional facilities.
