Bungie’s Destiny Shows A Light In The Darkness

Bungie has finally, and officially, revealed Destiny, their newest project!

Judging from the vidoc below, Destiny is supposed to be an action game set on a living, breathing world that persists when you’re away from your console. Does that mean it will take on massively multiplayer online game territory? Sort of.

According to an interview on CNET, Eric Hirshberg, chief executive of Destiny’s publisher, Activision, said the game “defied typical genres, giving it a new one — ‘shared-world shooter.'”

That means gamers can drop in and drop out of the game without having to wait in different lobbies to play with others. This is something that excites us terribly, because of the organic nature of play, because waiting in lobbies is so old school.

The video gives us a brief history on the world of Destiny, which features Earth with a giant sphere hanging over it, called the Traveler. In the game, there was a Golden Age in our civilization’s history, in which we traveled the stars and settled on planets across the solar system. But something struck at us, leaving only one remaining city on Earth, built underneath of the Traveler by the survivors of the cataclysm.

Destiny will have players create their own characters, who are Guardians of the City and are able to wield some of the Traveler’s powers. They’ll be able to explore the stars while still maintaining the safety of the City, gearing themselves out with unique weapons and powerful equipment.

And they’ll need that gear, since strange beings have occupied the old worlds, hoping to destroy the survivors once and for all. Luckily, you’ll have the help of myriads of players when it comes to the defense of the City and the exploration of the old worlds. The video seems to show a mobile app that lets you keep track of your Guardian’s stats and connect with different players, in order to create plans within the game. We hope that this becomes a reality, because the social interactions that this game promises look amazing.

We’ll update you when more news about this immensely-intriguing game that promises first-person shooter action, story, and loads of social interaction is released. You can pre-order the game right now through this page, though only Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are listed. The video indicates that Bungie has a 10-year plan with Destiny, so might this game see a next-gen release as well?

Let us know what you think about this upcoming game and whether or not you’re ready to lay down some pre-order money!
