Are Dandelions Out of Control This Year in Michigan?
Michigan homeowners are struggling with an overwhelming surge in dandelions this spring, with many blaming "No Mow May" and fewer weed treatments.
Dandelions
Dandelions are pretty, and rich in vitamins and minerals, an important food source for bees, but I can't stand them. I have lived in the same house for 6 years and managed to keep the dandelions under control for 5 years.
I have about 3 acres of grass to mow and treat my lawn each season, and noticed an uptick in dandelions last year, but was able to keep them under control. This season was out early with my crabgrass and weedkiller, but the dandelions seem unstoppable this year, and I don't know why.

Many in Michigan Are Saying The Dandelions Are Out of Control
I'm not alone in Michigan, thinking the dandelion population is over the top this year. Many Michiganders on Reddit are saying the same thing. Below are just a few of the many comments on the number of dandelions popping up in Michigan this season.
That is true, and I can relate because before the Amish moved in across the road, it was a cornfield treated for weeds. The Amish do not treat the land, letting everything grow freely, and the dandelions are spreading to every lawn in the neighborhood, making them tough to manage.
It seems people have slowed down on the weed killer for the bees, but I never see anyone eating the dandelions. Some animals will eat dandelions, too, but I watch the deer eat around them almost every day in the warmer months.
"No Mow May" has picked up steam over the last few years. I heard commercials on the radio for it this year, promoting not mowing your lawn so the bees can thrive on the dandelions. There is no way I couldn't mow my lawn in May, it would turn into a thick field that would take a brush hog to cut down.
The common thread in all the posts is that fewer people are treating their lawns with weed killer so the bees can thrive, and "No Mow May" is having a similar effect.

I still don't like dandelions and will continue to do what I can to keep them out of my yard. I think it's important to help the bees, and I have several acres of land where the dandelions thrive and are not treated. I just don't want them in my yard.
