Michigan’s 5 Biggest Spring Snowfalls
Over the years, parts of Michigan have experienced spring snowstorms that dumped significant snowfall just as flowers were beginning to bloom and residents were gearing up for their annual yardwork.
Here is a list of the top 5 snowfalls that happened in Michigan during the spring:
- May 21-22, 1883 - A historic late-season storm brought about five inches of snow to areas near Detroit, while Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula saw significantly heavier accumulations.
- May 9, 1923 - A massive late-season storm brought significant, record-setting snowfall to Southern Michigan, including 12 inches in Flint, 9 inches in Saginaw, and 6 inches in the Detroit area.
- May 2-3, 1929 - The Saginaw area recorded 4 inches of snow during spring.
- May 3, 1935 - The Saginaw area was struck again with 4.5 inches of snow, underscoring early May as a high-risk time for lingering winter weather.
- April 28-May1, 2026 - Heavy late-season snowfall was recorded in the Upper Peninsula, continuing a pattern of intense winter weather lingering into the spring season.

From Rain to Snow: Michigan’s Wild Spring Twist
When it comes to Michigan weather, surprises are almost guaranteed. After April brought massive rainfall and widespread flooding across the state, just as those conditions begin to ease, another unexpected twist in the weather is arriving for some residents.
According to MLive, a cold air mass is moving into Michigan, expected to turn rain showers into occasional snow showers tonight. Areas around Traverse City and Cadillac could see sporadic snow overnight and into early tomorrow morning, while the Upper Peninsula is forecast to receive heavier snowfall.

Cold air is expected to persist through the weekend, with parts of Lower Michigan possibly seeing a mix of rain and snow. After a brief break in activity on Sunday and Monday, additional snow showers could return by the middle of next week.
