Normally when a Michigander thinks of ice and the Upper Peninsula, it has to do with a bag of ice going in the cooler, ice fishing, or icy roads. There is another type of ice that has tribal leaders in the U.P. very concerned for its members.

The ICE Michigan tribal leaders is referring to are the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. ICE is a federal agency enforcing immigration laws and investigating illegal movement of people and goods.

ICE was created after the 9/11 attacks to help secure America's borders and enforce immigration policy. If you have watched the news anytime recently, you can see that ICE has moved from borders to inner cities for enforcement actions like raids and arrests.

ICE has mistaken tribe members across the country and have arrested them by mistake, and now Michigan's tribal leaders are trying to keep that from happening in the Upper Peninsula by encouraging its members to have their I.D.s and paperwork with them at all times.

According to the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and the Bay Mills Indian Community Facebook pages, tribal leaders are recommending its members know their rights and have provided fact sheets on how to deal with ICE agents if they are approached.

ICE agents have been targeting people with brown skin color which has led to unlawful arrests of American Indians which has tribes in Michigan concerned. Tribes encourage members to let officers know about their tribal affiliation, which makes them U.S. citizens under federal law, and carry I.D. and paperwork to prove it.
