West Michigan has been especially frigid lately. Not just like, "Ooh, it's a tad chilly" but record breaking cold, the kind where your face hurts and your car needs a pep talk before starting. And the arctic air is expected to hang around for a while.

And yet… teens continue their battle against winter clothing.

Michigan Teens vs. Winter Clothing

There’s a long-standing meme that says, “I hope my friends don’t find out I own a jacket — Middle Schoolers,” and honestly? Accurate. Anyone who’s spent time near a school pickup line in January has seen it: shorts. T-shirts. Maybe Crocs. Sometimes socks, sometimes not.

The letter came from Morley Stanwood Community Schools in a message sent by Superintendent Roger Cole. In it, the district admits it may seem “silly to write home about,” but explains it’s not uncommon for middle and high school students to arrive in winter wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

The Risks of Cold Weather on Buses

While buses handle snow and winter roads just fine, they don’t warm up the way your car at home does. And if a bus stalls, gets stuck, or has a flat tire, the temperature inside can drop quickly. Buses do not stay warm when they’re sitting still, raising concerns about hypothermia.
