Michiganders can all agree on one kind of tailgating, which happens on Saturdays and Sundays before football games. The other type of tailgating, which is happening on Michigan roads, is dangerous and appears to be a growing concern for drivers.

If you are driving behind a vehicle on a Michigan road or highway and can read the fine print above, you are tailgating that vehicle. Some refer to tailgating as shadowing, chasing, or dodging; whatever you call it, it's dangerous and against the law. If you get caught tailgating in Michigan, you will get a ticket, pay a fine, and points added to your driving record, which equates to auto insurance rates going up.

A recent Grand Rapids Reddit poster pointed out a huge increase in tailgating on US 131 and wondered why it's getting worse. I drive US 131 daily and have also noticed increased tailgating. Let's find out what others in West Michigan are saying about it.
The first poster on the thread may be onto something. I noticed some crazy driving during the COVID-19 shutdown on US 131.
I was tailgated several times on this morning's commute and saw an accident on the northbound side of the road because of tailgating too close.
It's not just US 131, it's a problem on nearly every road in Michigan.

The only way to fix this tailgating issue is for each driver to do a better job while driving on Michigan roads. We can't control reckless idiots, but we watch out for them and do our best as individuals.
