With warmer weather returning, lots of us are ready to dust off the fire pit and settle in for those classic spring nights outside. But if you live in Grand Rapids, there’s a rule that tends to catch people off guard: you actually need a permit before you light that wood-burning fire.

According to the Grand Rapids Fire Department, it’s already been an issue this season. Officials say they’ve received multiple complaints about recreational fires happening without permits, something many residents don’t even realize is required.

Fire Marshal William Smith explained the reasoning behind the policy:
Our goal is to allow safe and responsible enjoyment of recreational fires while protecting public health and adhering to environmental standards. The permit process ensures that fires are controlled, properly located and respectful of neighbors.
So what does that actually mean for you?
How to Get a Backyard Fire Permit in Grand Rapids
First, the permit isn’t optional. If you’re planning to burn wood in a backyard fire pit, you’ll need to apply through Citizen Access. You'll need to create an account first, then it costs $60 upfront, with a $10 renewal each year. And yes, your neighbors are part of the process. Anyone within 120 feet gets notified and has up to 21 days to raise concerns.

Permits are available for properties with up to two dwelling units, like single-family homes or duplexes. If you’re a renter, you can still apply, but you’ll need to upload written permission from the property owner.
Grand Rapids Fire Pit Rules and Safety Requirements
There are also some strict setup rules. Fires have to be in a backyard or side yard, at least 20 feet from structures and anything flammable, and 15 feet from overhead lines. You’ll also need to have a hose or fire extinguisher nearby at all times.

What You Can and Can’t Burn in Grand Rapids
Now, maybe like me, you're wondering: if you want to burn leaves do you still need a permit? Actually, within the city of Grand Rapids it is not legal to burn leaves, yard waste, and trash. I didn't know that!
Only clean, dry firewood is allowed. Timing matters too: fires are only permitted between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., and they’re banned altogether on high-risk or Ozone Action Days.
One important distinction: gas and propane fire pits don’t require a permit, but you still need to follow manufacturer guidelines and any local housing rules.
Bottom line? You can absolutely still enjoy a backyard fire in Grand Rapids, you just need to plan ahead a bit. And if you skip the permit, it could cost you more than just a relaxing evening, with potential fines or even having your fire shut down.
