We'll soon have a new option for working out in Grand Rapids.

Wood TV 8 reports that six outdoor fitness stations are opening at Canal and Sixth Street parks next month.

The equipment, which is free to use, includes cross elliptical machines, airwalkers, a hand cycler, and leg, bench and chest press machines.

According to a release, the equipment is from  Norwell Outdoor Fitness, and is made of powder coated steel, "which minimizes both vandalism and the need for maintenance".

The project is funded by Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority and Monroe North Tax Increment Finance Authority, which are managed by Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. The City of Grand Rapids funded and leads the installation of the work-out sites.

According to Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., Karie Enriquez, Project Manager for the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, said,

“We are grateful for our continued partnership with DGRI. This new exercise equipment in Canal and Sixth Street parks supports the exciting and important improvements in Downtown that enhance public outdoor spaces for city residents and visitors. The equipment is both beautiful to look at and fun for all ages, with a focus on cardiovascular health and balance, strength and flexibility.”
