Living in Beer City, USA where we have more craft beer per square mile than anywhere else on Earth has spoiled us here in Grand Rapids with our pretentious taste buds. It almost feels wrong to order run-of-the-mill beers when we have so many unique craft brews everywhere you go.

So maybe I was just biased when I saw the findings of a study determined that Michigan's most popular beer isn't one of our famous craft beers, and people aren't happy about it.

Beer Nation Study

Innerbody.com, a website dedicated to making guides to help simplify and understand health better, conducted a study using Google Trends to "compile beer search data for the top 24 beers." They used search data to determine which beers were being searched for the most and used that to decide which beer was the most popular in the state.

Michigan's Top Beer?

Based on the study's data, Michigan's most popular beer is Bud Light, the #2 beer in America. Despite losing its top spot to Modelo earlier this year after a poorly executed ad campaign saw its sales drop by 25%, it's apparently stayed pretty popular here in Michigan.

However, the results of this survey don't paint a whole story. Basing a state's favorite beer based on search trends of only the top 24 beer companies in the US isn't a fair assessment for a state like ours or even the Midwest as a whole.

So what is Michigan's Top Beer?

Over on the r/Grand Rapids subreddit, users were up in arms over the results of these findings, with many claiming that beers from Kalamazoo brewery Bell's deserved the top spot for Michigan's Top Beer. Two Hearted IPA and Oberon were mentioned the most among users, with Founder's All Day IPA and Rubeus Nitro also getting brought up.
