City of Grand Rapids Giving Away Free Firewood
The City of Grand Rapids Forestry Division is hosting a log giveaway Nov. 4 and 5, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the City’s yard waste drop off site (2001 Butterworth St. SW).
The event is part of the Forestry division’s new Urban Wood Utilization Program. Their goal is to reduce waste from from Grand Rapids trees that have fallen or were removed due to damage and disease.
Logs are about eight feet in length, one foot in diameter, and you'll need a truck or trailer to haul them. City staff will be at the log giveaway to help with loading.
How Many Logs is the City of Grand Rapids Giving Away?
There are approximately 2,000 logs available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no limit to the number of logs one person can take.
The City says the wood is best suited for firewood, however they do plan to create a program for woodworkers and local businesses to buy high-quality wood.
Joe Sulak, the City’s parks superintendent says,
Sustainability is one of the City’s core values, and the Urban Wood Utilization program is one way we can embrace that value. By giving away the logs rather than contracting with a company to dispose of them we expect to save approximately $20,000 annually. We’re excited to expand this program to continue reducing forestry waste, saving taxpayer dollars, and serving the community and businesses.
If you'd like free firewood, the City prefers that you pre-register for a 30-minue timeslot here.
