Lime Scooters Could Leave Grand Rapids This Fall

Lime bikes and e-scooters have become a popular transportation option for Grand Rapids residents and visitors. But that could soon change, as there’s a chance Lime could leave the city for good this fall.

Lime Bikes and E-Scooters

Lime scooters first arrived in Grand Rapids as part of a pilot program in September 2020, giving the city a chance to see whether residents would embrace them. The official launch of Lime bikes and e-scooters followed on Friday, June 4, 2021. Since then, the electric micro-mobility vehicles have been a big hit with residents and visitors alike, although not so much with those who occasionally have to fish them out of the Grand River.

Grand Rapids has recorded massive ridership numbers, ranking among the cities with the highest Lime usage rates in the world. But city leaders have also raised concerns about a variety of issues that can come with having multiple companies operating e-bikes and scooters.

Grand Rapids Could See Changes to Lime Bike Program

Fox 17 reported that the City of Grand Rapids is looking to move away from the Lime company end its partnership with Lime and switch to California-based Veo. Clutter, safety concerns, and costs to riders were cited as reasons for the potential change.

Many residents use the bikes and scooters to go to school, work, or to get groceries. They have become a part of the culture in downtown Grand Rapids. Veo offers more options than Lime, including a tricycle version of its scooter.

Veo uses front-facing radar technology that scans up to 20 feet ahead of the bike or scooter. The system can detect potential dangers and automatically slow down or shut off the vehicle as a safety precaution. Veo pricing is slightly lower than Lime’s in some areas and slightly higher in others.

So, don’t be surprised if Lime disappears from Grand Rapids in September and Veo becomes the city’s new bike and scooter provider.
