The Journey Behind the Park Name

Getting this $2.23 million project to the finish line was quite a journey, especially when it came to picking a name. An initial public vote in 2024 resulted in "Navarro Plaza" winning by a slim margin to honor local Hispanic business pioneers Miguel and Isabel Navarro, founders of the El Matador Chip Factory.

That outcome sparked a community debate, with some residents pushing back and arguing for a broader engagement process and a name they felt better represented the neighborhood park. After a second public vote in 2025, Unity Park eventually won out, with city leaders committing at the same time to finding another fitting way to honor the Navarro family legacy in the area.

New Amenities Built for the Community at Unity Park

Now, the finished park is open and packed with features designed directly from community feedback! Built for all ages to enjoy, the site offers an inclusive play zone with a nest swing and rubberized surfacing.

The park also boasts a flexible multi-use gathering plaza built for local vendors and community pop-ups, a rain garden for natural drainage, upgraded safety lighting, connected bike paths, and water bottle filling stations. The entire build was made possible through the Michigan Enhancement Grant, the Parks Capital Fund, and local nonprofit support.
