
West Michigan’s Baby Hippo Count Grows With New Arrival At Wild Animal Park
How lucky are we in West Michigan to have not one, but now two baby pygmy hippos?
Last year, John Ball Zoo welcomed Hugo, who recently enjoyed his first snow day. He’s the first pygmy hippo ever born at the Grand Rapids zoo, making it a historic moment for both the zoo and the local community. And now he’s got company!

Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park Welcomes a Baby Hippo
Another local spot has its own tiny hippo that the Internet is already in love with. On December 18, Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park in Alto welcomed their newest addition: a female pygmy hippo calf.

The little one is currently unnamed—got any good suggestions? The park is asking for them.
Mom and Calf: Off-Season Encounter
She’s the daughter of Betty and Levi. See video of mom and baby together here! During her first week, Betty kept her safely tucked away in their den for some quiet bonding time. Now, mom and calf are spending more time outside, and visitors can see them together during most off-season pygmy hippo encounters.

Explore Boulder Ridge’s Exotic Animals
Set on nearly 100 acres and home to more than 1,300 animals, Boulder Ridge is already a must-see. Guests can hand-feed giraffes, watch rhinos up close, cheer on playful penguins, and explore dozens of other exotic animals.
The park officially opens in May and each July, Baby Animal Days gives visitors a chance to meet the park’s newest arrivals—and now that includes this little pygmy hippo!
