The nominees for the 54th annual Grammy Awards were announced and they contain a few surprises. Rock staples like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Death Cab For Cutie, Radiohead and Foo Fighters are up for trophies, but indie stars Foster the People, The Black Keys and Bon Iver were also able to get Grammy nods.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are up for Best Rock Album with I'm With You, who go against Foo Fighters in the same category for Wasting Light. The Foos received 5 more nominations, including Album of the Year for Wasting Light and Best Rock Performance for "Walk".

Previous Grammy winners The Black Keys are nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Dearest". Mastodon picks up a Grammy nod in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for "Curl of the Burl".

Perhaps the most surprising nominations are for indie folk band Bon Iver, who are up for 4 Grammys including the prestigious Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Holocene". The Wisconsin group are also competing for Best New Artist, which confuses me because Bon Iver released their debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, in 2008.

The full list of nominees can be found at the official Grammy Awards website. The ceremony will air February 12, 2012, at 8pm EST on CBS.

What do you think of the list? Any artists that you feel were snubbed?
