One of Michigan's most popular roadways is changing it's signs in an effort to deter theft.

According to M-Live, state officials hope new signs that say "22" instead of "M-22" won't be as attractive to thieves along the scenic northern Michigan highway.

M-22 runs through Manistee, Benzie, and Leelanau counties, winding along Lake Michigan and through lush woods.

Leelanau county especially is popular with vacationers, know for it's vineyards, beaches, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

In a USA Today 10 Best poll, M-22 was voted the Best Scenic Autumn Drive in the U.S.

Transportation Department spokesman James Lake estimates that crews have replaced 90 M-22 signs in the past three years. He urges anyone who wants M-22 merchandise to purchase it from local retailers.

"It's certainly a popular route for travelers and there are some companies marketing M-22 signs themselves and other memorabilia and that seems to factor into their popularity. We hope people would understand our interest in protecting taxpayer investments in protecting these signs and realize if they're interested in M-22 merchandise, it's for sale."
