I was never really into sports as a young kid. I enjoyed going outside, sledding on hills, throwing snowballs, etc. Even my immediate family are not really sports people, so I didn't grow up with it.

What I did grow up with, was video games, and Nintendo had the BEST sports game on the original NES.

Go figure right? Metalhead Ned's first Hockey experience is on a video game console. Anyway, I remember my brothers friend Tim coming over and he had this game called Ice Hockey on NES. At first I kind of ignored it, it didn't have Mario, Zelda, or TMNT in it, so why the hell would I care. Then they started playing it, and it seemed extremely fun!

You would choose your team like USA, U.S.S.R, Sweden, etc. Then you choose the size of your 4 player hockey teams. Either be it a skinny guy who is quick, medium player who is an 'all arounder,' or fat guy who can knock anyone over but is slow. This was a unique way of customizing your team.

The gameplay was fun and easy to learn! Games could get pretty competitive when playing with a friend too! One of my favorite parts as a kid was during halftime, the Zamboni's would come out and clean up the ice. Another fun part was starting fights with the opposing team, whomever started the fight will be sent to the penalty box. I always liked trying to start fights with the opposing team.

Ice Hockey I still consider is one of the best sports games out there and it is a lot of fun! Just a fun as watching real hockey. Which by the way, if you are an ice hockey fan, you should check out our WGRD Pond Hockey Classic @ Richmond Park coming up at the end of this month!
