Incredibly ESPN Doesn’t Consider Jim Caldwell’s Coaching Job in Detroit Completely Safe

Despite the fact the Detroit Lions enjoy the second best record in the NFC, currently slated as the second seed in the playoffs and can clinch the NFC North with a win heading into week 15 of the 2016 NFL season, ESPN still doesn’t consider head coach Jim Caldwell’s job completely safe.

According to a recent ranking of the job security of each NFL coach by ESPN, they rank Jim Caldwell’s job safety as a 2 on a 1-5 scale with 1 being totally, Belichickingly safe and 5 being likely fired (emphasis added):

What Caldwell has done with the Lions this season has been incredibly impressive, as his team continues to come from behind to win games and will have two winning seasons in his first three years in Detroit. The only reason this isn’t a “1” is this is general manager Bob Quinn’s first full season of evaluation on Caldwell, and the Lions haven’t yet clinched a playoff spot. With quarterback Matthew Stafford beat up and Caldwell having handled his team so well so far this season after a 1-3 start, Caldwell feels completely safe. A three-game losing streak to end the season could raise some questions, though.

Sure, the Lions have one of the toughest schedules heading down the stretch with games against the other teams with the best records in the conference in the Cowboys and the Giants and a tough divisional matchup with Green Bay. But still, Caldwell must be asking what more he could do this season to get a little more respect?
