Winter Carnival Brings Stunning Snow Sculptures to Life
Michigan Technological University is located in Houghton, Michigan, in the state's Upper Peninsula. The campus is situated in a rural, scenic setting near the Keweenaw Peninsula.
For 104 years, Michigan Tech has hosted its annual Winter Carnival, beginning in 1922 as a one‑night “Ice Carnival. The snow sculptures began with their early celebrations, but it was in 1934 when the large scale snow statues began to be created.
Each year the Blue Key National Honor Society chooses an overall theme for the snow sculptures that student organizations build in month-long or overnight competitions.

As engineering and technology students, they craft snow sculptures far more intricate than a traditional snowman with charcoal eyes and a carrot for the nose.

The event was four days, February 4–7, and this year’s theme was “Through Ice and Snow, to Space We Go,” reflected in every sculpture.
The event is not just the massive snow sculptures, but there is a drone show, dog sled races, and ice bowling.
The attention to detail on these snow sculptures is incredible, but you shouldn't expect anything less from the students at Michigan Tech.
