Hot Yoga, Cross-fit, and keto diets all have something in common: If you have a friend that indulges in one of these hobbies, they are sure to let you know about it and the "health benefits they hold."

A few months ago I was piled with information from a friend about how "butter coffee" is changing their life. To say the least... I was skeptical.

You see, I'm a coffee SNOB, and if it's not made right, you will be SURE to know about it (sorry to any barista at Starbucks who has served me). This whole butter and coffee thing to me at first seemed like a deadly sin to the world of the honorable hot bean water Gods, surely this can't be a thing... oh was I wrong.

As the old saying goes, don't bash it till' you try it, and being the coffee addict that I am, I figured it would be an easier habit to adopt rather than sweating my butt off in a hot room or from doing a million burpee's a day (it's a cross-fit thing I guess?). So after a little research I went to the store and got some Grass-fed butter and some high-quality coconut oil intending to try it for a few days but now... I can't stop and coffee will never be the same. The recipe is simple: BLEND (do not stir it in... trust me) one or two teaspoons of butter with an equal measurement of high-quality coconut oil in your cup of hot coffee and enjoy!

Before getting into what I thought, it's important to understand why the heck people are doing this in the first place. I was informed that the "energy spike" and jitters from that glorious first cup (which cause many to fear the powerful beverage) is much more of a smoother and more sustained ascent. Not only that but it helps the drinker feel more full for a longer period of time, helps burn fat, it improves skin tone, and is a hangover cure.... okay now you have my interest.

Apparently Kerrygold unsalted butter is the way to go as it has a high butterfat content. That mixed with the MCT oil found in the coconut oil slams your liver into gear where it begins to break down Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) more effectively. MCT's are hailed in the medical community for their health benefits and fat burning abilities. They are used to treat food absorption disorders like celiac, crohn's (which I have) and liver disease. Athletes also use them to help give an extra boost to their workout routine along with a TON of other perks.

Due to all this extra work being done by your liver, the coffee processes through you at a slower rate, thus the slower climb and descent in energy rather than a giant kick in the pants, followed by a crash later on. Not only that but starting the day out with a small amount of these fats curbs your body's desire for them for up to six to eight hours along with helping your body produce HDL, which is the "good cholesterol".

So what did I think? I started about two weeks ago and have not stopped since. I did at first miss the step about blending the butter and oil rather than stirring it and while this may not change the effectiveness of the beverage, all the oils sort of float up to the top after some time, making it less than pleasurable. So after getting down the proper preparation method, I was blown away by the taste! It is less acidic and somewhat sweeter with a silky frothy finish. Taste rating: 10/10

I can't say much for the weight loss as I am already a bean pole, but they were NOT lying about the energy changes. I felt like throughout the morning, i kept feeling more and more awake until I felt my mind operating like a supercomputer. I was more attentive, more efficient and was less distracted by little things in daily life (a challenge for an adult with ADD). I felt satisfied by my light breakfast for a longer period of time, sometimes to the point where I just forgot to eat lunch... oops!

So pardon me for being that guy buuuuttttt, OMG, butter coffee... you HAVE to try it, and let me know what you think of it!
