West MI Mom Had to Appear in Court for Taking Away Teen Daughter’s iPhone

When I was a kid, I remember my parents banning video games or grounding us from TV as punishment... If cell phones had been more common then, they probably would have taken those away too.

A Hudsonville mom had to appear in court on Tuesday for just that, and she faced up to 93 days in jail.

Wood TV 8 reports that Jodie May stood before a  district judge, accused of stealing the phone.

May says her daughter got in trouble in school in April, and so she took away the iPhone 6 to discipline her.

May's ex-husband then claimed the phone was his, and filed a complaint with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, alleging his ex-wife stole the phone.

May was arrested, then immediately release on $200 bond.

In court Tuesday, she faced a larceny charge punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

Just before the trial began, prosecutors approached the judge, saying they found out the ex-husband didn't own the phone; the daughter did. According to the assistant prosecutor, that "changes the case significantly."

The charges were then dismissed.

May told Wood TV 8,

"I think it's ridiculous. I can't believe I had to be put through it, my daughter had to be put through it, my family. I'm very surprised, but I'm very happy with the outcome."
