There are some pretty big changes coming to two of West Michigan's most popular ice rinks. New ownership, new names, and major upgrades to the facilities are coming to Griff's Icehouse West and Griff's Georgetown.

It was announced yesterday that they were purchased by Black Bear Sports Group, a hockey management company that owns, manages, and operates 47 ice rinks around the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

The two ice arenas, now called the Holland Ice Arena and the Hudsonville Ice Arena, are owned by the same group that bought the Wings Event Center (now Wings West) in Kalamazoo in 2025. It gives the BBSG a solid foothold in West Michigan, adding to the 6 other locations on the east side.

What's Changing At The Arenas?

In Black Bear's press release, they outlined the multi-million-dollar upgrades coming to the facility, including "renovating or replacing the ice plant systems, subfloor components, and dehumidification equipment."

Surprisingly, Black Bear has stated that none of these improvements will impact the 2025-2026 season programs already underway. That means all kids and adult leagues, as well as Learn to Skate and Learn to Play classes, will continue as planned. From the sounds of things, outside a name and some facility improvements, the Icehouses will remain functionally the same.

The only Griff's location left is the Griff's Icehouse at Belknap Park, where the Grand Rapids Griffins practice. This Icehouse is publicly owned, making its sale unlikely.

Red Wings Honor Sergei Fedorov With #91 Jersey Retirement

Every Sweater Number in Detroit Red Wings History Worn Just Once (Or Not At All)

For whatever reason, these numbers have either been worn just once or never at all in the nearly 100-year history of Detroit Red Wings hockey, according to Hockey Reference.

(Hockey Reference suggests that No. 6 was only worn by Cummy Burton, which is incorrect as Larry Aurie wore the number first and the number is pseudo-retired. Such inaccuracies are difficult to narrow down, so where they can be corrected they will be.)
