Grand Rapids Music Venue, Bar + Restaurant to Shut Down
The business closures continue in Grand Rapids. Recently we told you that The Foolery had shut its doors, as well as Sushi Kuni, along with multiple other bars and restaurants.

Now a West Side music venue and eatery has announced its closure.
Turnstiles first opened at 526 Stocking Ave. NW in the spring of 2021. Prior to that, the building was home to Joe V's Sports Bar and Palace of India.

The venue featured a stage for local bands and a mix of traditional and CD jukeboxes.
Owner Robert Schellenberg, a Grand Rapids native with years in the restaurant industry and deep ties to the local music scene, envisioned Turnstiles as a home for musicians and industry workers alike.

Its menu offered bar favorites like burgers, nachos, tacos, loaded fries, and wings while the cocktail list ranged from classics to creative house specialties like the ginger-and-cucumber infused “Westside Girl".
Turnstiles quickly became known for its open mic nights, trivia, and welcoming vibe, but now—just a few years after opening—it’s the latest Grand Rapids spot to call it quits.
In a heartfelt message to Facebook, the owners shared the news of Turnstiles' closure:
After years of shared drinks, live music, and countless memories, the time has come to say goodbye. Turnstiles will be closing its doors. Our final night of service will be Saturday, July 26.
The team cited challenges faced by many small, independent venues: rising costs, a changing market, and a recent deal to secure the property that ultimately fell through.

They also reflected on what made Turnstiles special:
This place was always more than bricks and bills. It was a stage. A soundcheck. A chorus of voices rising together under dim lights… From punk to funk, we filled these walls with sound – and you were there for every note.
Turnstiles will remain open for a final round of shows and service through July 26.
You're invited to “Come raise a glass, swap a story, and say farewell the way Turnstiles deserves."
