Downtown Grand Rapids Biggby Coffee in McKay Tower Closes
Coffee lovers in downtown Grand Rapids now have one less spot to grab a cup. Just a few months after celebrating 20 years in the city’s core, the Biggby Coffee location inside McKay Tower has permanently closed.
The shop, located at 146 Monroe Center St. NW, had long been a familiar stop in the heart of downtown.
Biggby Closing Rumors
In March, there were reports that employees were telling customers the store would close on March 8. At the time, owner Tim Offman told MLive it was a misunderstanding with staff and said the location was not shutting down.
After seeing recent rumblings online, I stopped by the location myself on Wednesday to take a look.

Signage has now been removed, there is paper covering the windows, and a “closed” sign is posted on the interior door. The sign does say a new tenant will be moving in soon.
However, at this time, Google still shows the location as open and it remains listed on the company's website.

The closure comes as Biggby Coffee, a Michigan-founded company that began in East Lansing in 1995, continues to report overall system growth. In a recent company update, Biggby said it finished 2025 with more than 460 locations across 13 states after opening 47 new stores during the year.

That broader growth comes alongside recent local changes in Grand Rapids, including the downtown McKay Tower closure and another location on Wealthy Street earlier this year.
As of now, there has been no updated public statement confirming what lead to the closure of the downtown store.
