Grand Rapids Sushi Restaurant Closes After 15 Years
Grand Rapids has lost yet another local restaurant. Honestly, 2025 has been rough on the GR food scene. We just shared news about a downtown eatery shutting down and a Balkan bakery closing up shop.

Now, Sushi Kuni is the latest to shut its doors.
Sushi Kuni, located on Breton Road, had been serving up Japanese and Korean fusion dishes since 2010. The menu was packed with favorites—crispy dumplings, savory Korean pancakes, spring rolls, crab rangoon, and more.

You could warm up with a bowl of soup or dig into a fresh salad before chowing down on a wide variety of entrées like chicken, beef, or salmon teriyaki, poke bowls, katsu, stir fry, bulgogi, and bibimbap. And let’s not forget the sushi—so many rolls, so much sashimi—with ingredients like shrimp, crab, eel, tuna, mango, filet mignon, asparagus, avocado… the list went on.
The owners recently shared the news on their website, writing:
To our cherished customers, after 15 amazing years, Sushi Kuni will be closing its doors at the end of June 2025. The decision comes with deep gratitude for the incredible journey we've shared with all of you.

While it’s always tough to see a longtime local spot close, there is a silver lining. A new restaurant is already lined up to take over the space at 2901 Breton Road SE—this time, it’ll be a full-service Korean restaurant called HaluDam.

Still, Sushi Kuni will be missed. Over on Reddit’s r/grandrapids, fans are feeling the loss:
“Noooooo! They are my favorite!”
“They’ve been a staple for years. If this is true, it’s sad to see them go. Best sushi the area has seen.
Devastated. They were my favorite sushi in town. Thank you for posting though, just ordered my last meal.
A timeline for when HaluDam will open has yet to be shared. Follow HaluDam on Instagram for updates.
