What Will Happen to Sherman’s Dairy’s Iconic Blue Cows?
Last weekend West Michigan said to goodbye to a South Haven landmark. For more than 60 years, Sherman's Dairy had been serving up massive scoops of ice cream, sundaes, flurries, shakes, and more.
As iconic as Sherman's many ice cream flavors are the blue cows that perch atop the dairy's roof. Now that that Sherman's is closed, many are wondering, what will happen to them?

The business first began as a dairy farm in 1916 and started making ice cream in 1958.
Back in 2019, Sherman's stopped making its own ice cream and Hudsonville Ice Cream took over, using Sherman's family recipes. As of Oct. 26, 2024, Sherman's officially shut its doors. A reason for the closure was not given in an announcement to Facebook.
A South Haven native, I did make a return trip home for one last cone at Sherman's Dairy with my family. A week before it's official closure, A LOT of other folks had the same idea as we waited in line for nearly an hour.
Still, it was worth it for that final scoop of Cotton Candy ice cream in a waffle cone!

Of course I had to snap a pic of the Sherman's cows! How long have they been around?
According to WWMT, the larger cow came from the 1999 Chicago parade of cows and was placed on Sherman's roof in 2004; the smaller cow joined in 2014.
Do you know they actually have names?
I learned this back in 2020 when the mother cow (Blue Moo) was vandalized an the baby cow (Baby Blue) was stolen. Thankfully Baby Blue was returned, the statues were repaired, and all was once again right with the world!
What now, will be the fate of Baby Blue and Blue Moo? A thread on the The South Haven Michigan Chatline Facebook recommends multiple new homes for the cows.
There does seem to be a debate about who actually owns the iconic bovines - the Sherman family or Hudsonville Ice Cream? Maybe the owners will see the post and be motivated to place Baby Blue and Blue Moo somewhere special! Many are also expressing that the cows might be vandalized again if put somewhere where people can get to them...
What would you like to see happen to those iconic bovines? I know I'd love to see them set up somewhere around South Haven!
