The Long-Awaited Robocop Statue Has Finally Been Erected in Detroit
In the year 1987, Detroit was used as the setting for a futuristic, violent version of the city known as Old Detroit that saw one of the good men on the police force killed in action. With the police force now the first in the world to be owned by a corporation, good-cop Alex Murphy is brought back to life as a cyborg that patrols the streets.

The iconic film has held a cult-following for many years, with support for the franchise spawning three movies between 1987 and 1993, a reboot in 2014, and a fan-made video game in 2023. Now, the franchise has been immortalized in a whole new way: a life-sized statue portraying the "Robocop" that's been 14 years in the making.
Eastern Market's Robocop Statue
The RoboCop statue is 10 feet tall, made of bronze, and weighs a whopping 2.5 tons, according to Eastern Market, where it is housed. This project was originally proposed to the city, but the mayor turned it down. So instead, the team turned ot the public. Funding for this project began in 2012, when a Kickstarter raised nearly $70,000 to build a statue of the metallic man somewhere in the city.
