New Changes Announced Ahead of 2027 One-Buck Rule
2027 Will Be Michigan’s First Year of the One-Buck Rule
According to a recent press release from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, beginning in 2027, hunters in the Lower Peninsula will be limited to harvesting one buck across all deer seasons. Regulations for hunters in the Upper Peninsula, however, will remain unchanged.

Several changes to deer hunting seasons are set to take effect beginning in 2026.
New 2026 Changes Arrive Before One-Buck Rule Launches
Before the one-buck rule takes effect in 2027, the DNR has rolled out several changes for the 2026 deer seasons:
- Additional changes to Michigan deer hunting regulations include the elimination of antlerless license drawings in the Upper Peninsula.
- Muzzleloader season will be shortened from 10 days to just three days, beginning on the first Friday in December. In the Lower Peninsula, hunters will be allowed to use any legal firearm during the newly renamed December Firearm Deer Season.
- The late Antlerless Season will begin the following Monday after the December Firearm Deer Season and last through January 1.
- The Limited Firearms Deer Zone in the Lower Peninsula has been eliminated.
- All Extended late Antlerless and January Archery seasons have been eliminated, concluding all deer hunting seasons after January 1.
- The Early Antlerless Firearm Deer Season and the Liberty Hunt will be combined and will be September 12-13 this year.
- Universal antlerless deer licenses will be limited depending on your hunting area.

These changes should improve deer hunting across the state over time. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources may want to consider implementing two years of spring doe culls on private land to help create a more balanced herd. Still, the new regulations are a major step in the right direction for the future of deer hunting in Michigan.
