Many local craft breweries have gotten creative with their spent grains, finding all kinds of second lives for them. These leftover grains can be turned into bread, cookies, pizza dough, pet treats, and livestock feed. Packed with protein and fiber, they can be dried and milled into flour or used wet to enrich soil or support mushroom cultivation.

Some breweries are finding new uses for their spent grains by turning it into fertilizer, soil amendments, or compost additives. Rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter, these byproducts help boost soil health and fertility. They’re most effective when used fresh as a “green” component in compost or mixed directly into the soil, though they can also be dried for later use.
